SOUTH BAY, Fla. – Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday announced what he called a major step forward in Florida’s historic Everglades restoration effort, breaking ground on a massive inflow pump station designed to move up to 3 billion gallons of water per day south into the Everglades once completed.
The Everglades Agricultural Area, or EAA Inflow Pump Station, located just south of Lake Okeechobee, is a central component of the 10,000-acre EAA Reservoir Project. Once complete, it will store more than 78 billion gallons of water, enough to fill nearly 120,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools, and deliver 370,000 acre-feet of clean water to the Everglades ecosystem each year.

Anna Upton, CEO of the Everglades Trust, drew historical parallels in her remarks.
“Teddy Roosevelt said the nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets to be turned over to the next generation increased and not impaired,” Upton said. “Governor DeSantis, you put that principle into practice.”
